Good-by Netherlands
2003年、オランダのフローニンゲンで開かれる展覧会に出品することになった。
私は出国する前にオランダという国を調べた。オランダという国は国土の4分の1が干拓で出来ており、「世界は神がつくり賜うたが、オランダはオランダ人がつくった」という言葉まであるという。しかし、ここ最近の地球温暖化による海面上昇により、将来ほとんどの土地が水没するといわれ深刻な問題にもなっている。
私は、オランダの街を徘徊しながら教会の鐘の音、若者が自転車で颯爽と走っている音、店内の店員と客とのやりとりの声、信号機が点滅する音等の様々な風景音を録音し、その街の音をこのギャラリーの壁の中から流した。そして、床下には水たまりを張った。この水たまりはそれらの音に反応して波紋が広がるようになっている。この時、スピーカーを水たまりに直接浸けていた為に、あたかも海底に街が沈んだような音が響いた。

I participated in the exhibition held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 2003.
I looked over the country before I departed for. A quarter of the land is reclaimed land. There is a saying that “the world was made by the god, but the Netherlands was made by the Dutch.” They are facing a severe problem that the country might sink in the future by the rise of the sea because of the recent global warming.
I recorded the sounds of the bell at a church, young man going with the bicycle, conversation of a shop assistant and a shopper, the blinking signal and many other sounds in the city. I made a work of those sounds you could hear from the gallery walls. I also made a small pool on the floor so that the viewers could watch the ripples caused by the sounds. When I dipped a speaker in the pool, it sounded as if the town had sunk in the sea.
